On Friday April 18, 2008 I had the pleasure of attending the Chican Comedy Troupe which proudly presented ‘Testro Izcalli’ in the BMU Auditorium. This event was brought on by NAK, the Latino/Chicano fraternity here on Chico State campus. The auditorium was filled with laughter, espanol, and social awareness. This was truly an ‘eye opening’ event, where I had the pleasure of witnessing some of the native dances of the Mexican heritage and hearing some delightful comedy.

I learned a great deal from this event, from the native dances of the Mexican people to some of the staggering statistics that was presented. I could tell from the dances and the attitudes of the actors/actresses that the Mexican/Chicano heritage is a very proud one and strong one. I learned that they have a lot of respect and pride in their women, and took a moment to pray for all the women in their culture. After the native dances, the act was followed by the comedy of ‘Testro Izcalli’, the hilarity of their act continued into the late night where they provided a few routines from ‘Pedro for President’ to ‘ITT, Institute of Taco Technology’.  The show was very enjoyable for people of all ages, colors, creeds and yes even those whom could not speak Spanish like myself.

The punch line of the whole show was to know some Spanish, going into the event I knew very little Spanish and some of the jokes where hard to understand if you did not know any Spanish. But, rolling with the flow I watched and enjoyed the comedy that was presented to me. My favorite act was ‘Pedro for President’, this hilarious act was brought on by two of the actors speaking in thick Mexican accents and showing their causes and why they should be president.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show from all aspects, from the learning, the laughter and the staggering statistics. It was hard to follow parts of the show because a lot of the punch lines and informative parts were in Spanish, but I tried to roll with the flow of the crowd as much as possible.  It would have been tremendously helpful if I did know some Spanish to help with the punch lines but the show was enjoyable and about the only word that I did recognize was ‘Caca de Perro”.
