On Tuesday April 29, 2008 I attended the International Forum at CSU Chico.  At the Forum I heard a speech about Pakistan from speaker Mahan Mirza from the Department of Religious Studies, the speech was very informative. Throughout his presentation I learned a lot of new facts about Pakistan, from the rainfall to the population of the country. Many of us have been hearing about Pakistan recently in the news and it was interesting to hear fact from fiction about his marvelous country.

There were a lot of interesting facts that I have learned from Mr. Mirza, the monsoon season in Pakistan and last from July to August and averages around thirty eight inches of rain per year. I found this very interesting because stereotypically we would assume that Pakistan is a desert country just by what we can see on the maps. Currently there are around 170 million proud Pakistani’s, and surprisingly most of the population is under the age of 30. From what I remember in the news was the reason for this was the recent wars that ravaged the countries. These are just some of the interesting facts that I have learned from his presentation.

For a long time Muslims in India and it was decided that Hindus and Muslims count not reside in the same country. The name Pakistan literally means “The Land of the Pure”, it was founded in 1947 and founded by Muhammed Ali Jinnah. Pakistan has gone through a number of constitutions since it was implemented and has changed from civilian to military power several times. They have a large and strong military, of which they spend a great deal of money training their soldiers and buying newer and better equipment. There is a large Anti-American sentiment that is felt throughout most of the country.

All in all in learned a great deal of information from this event, from information about the topography, geography and even to the population of the country. It was interesting to hear all of this information from his perspective and hearing it hopefully without bias as is displayed in much of the United States “Free Media”. Mr. Mirza did an excellent job in presenting this information and I look forward to hearing about more events/speeches put on by Mr. Mirza.
